Every Color Illuminates
Announcing our new comic series SPECTRUM, coming in November from Mad Cave Studios
Hey ho, let’s go. Spectrum, my very first published series (co-created with Dave Chisholm), is coming this fall via Mad Cave Studios. From the official press release:
Melody Parker is losing her mind. She’s living on the streets of Seattle during the WTO protests of 1999. She is seeing things. Androids. Aliens. Pigs in high fashion. And a creature named Echo—one of the Sustained: elemental beings with the power to alter reality through music. She invites Melody to join her as she brings about the end of the world. As Melody tries to escape this strange woman, suppressed memories from across vast spans of time flood into her awareness, bringing her very identity into question.
We can’t say too much more quite yet. Issue #1 is coming out November 20th, so we’re still several months out from release. BUT…
I can say that I’m very excited. This project started with me at a creative low point, frustrated at nearly ten years of writing in indie comics with little to show for it. As I’ve done a few other times in similar moments, I sat down, consciously pushed all other considerations aside (financial feasibility, marketability, et al.) and wrote something “for fun.” Meaning, just for me and no one else. What emerged was a sort of phantasmagorical memoir—a memoir about, among other things, my relationship to music; how music and memory for me are so close as to be indistinguishable from one another; how a piece of art—a song—can literally save your life.
I finished the script and shared it with my friend Dave, the brilliant and prolific and multi-hyphenate creator behind such modern classics as Chasin’ the Bird and Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound. I knew he’d appreciate the story and the inspiration behind it. I had no intention of ever making the book a reality; I was just glad to get it out of my system.
And then he texted me “I want to draw it.”
So we got started.
Three preview pages have been released so far. Check them out below!
